PPRD Med - Building the Next Generation of Disaster Risk Trainers

1 min read

Six countries. One goal: making disaster risk knowledge self-sustaining across the Mediterranean.

In March–April and June 2026, the EU-funded PPRD Med programme brought together national experts in Tunis for a Sub-Regional Train-the-Trainer programme — equipping participants not just with skills, but with the capacity to train others back home.

Over two complementary sessions in Tunisia, participants deepened their expertise in multi-hazard risk assessment, geospatial tools, satellite-based Earth Observation, and NaTech scenarios. In the second workshop, they returned with real-world applications from their institutions — sharing results, challenges, and lessons learned.

The outcome: a growing pool of qualified national trainers who will replicate this knowledge across their countries, building long-term disaster prevention, preparedness and response capacities in the region.

Funded by the European Union and implemented by ISTC (International Science and Technology Center) in partnership with GOPA PACE and the Union for the Mediterranean.

The PPRD Med project is funded by the European Commission DG ECHO (Directorate General European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations) and is implemented by ISTC (International Science and Technology Center) with the support of ESA/R3 Accelerator (European Space Agency). The R3 Accelerator/Civil Security from Space programme (CSS), aims to enhance the contribution of space solutions to support the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, for the substantial reduction of economic losses as well as losses in lives, livelihoods, and health due to climate-induced crises.
